Family Traditions
Holiday Tradition
By Vishal
In our family we celebrate Christmas every year. We put up Christmas decorations and make a gingerbread house. We all gather at our grandparents house. My cousins, uncles, and aunts are all there. During the day we have fun playing with eachother. If it is snowing outside we go sledding and make snowmans and angels. On Christmas Eve we have a big dinner. Sometimes my grandpa serves leftover turkey from Thanksgiving. We share jokes and tell about our grades at school. After this we sit around the Christmas tree. Grandma sometimes serves eggnog. We also take a lot of pictures. Then we open our gifts. There is always something new every year. After this we go to bed very quickly so Santa can come. But before we go to bed we make sure we place cookies and milk for St. Nick next to the fireplace. On Christmas morning we check and see what Santa brought us.

We also celebrate Diwali the festival of lights from India. It happens in the month of October or November. We put up flower garlands on the doors of our houses. On the floor outside on our porch we draw colorful designs called Rangoli. We light up the house with colorful bulbs and candles. In the evening we go to a temple to pray. After that several families gather together at a large building. We are all dressed in traditional Indian clothes. We then enjoy foods and sweets cooked in the Indian style. Finally we have a cultural show of Indian religious dances and songs. The night ends with Indian and then Amercian national anthem.
